A Senior Home Safety Checklist for Aging in Place
Most falls and injuries at home are preventable. Use this room-by-room home safety checklist to help your loved one stay safe and independent while aging in place in Northern Virginia.

Most older adults want the same thing: to stay in their own home for as long as possible. The good news is that with a few practical changes, the home they love can also be the safe place they need. Falls are the leading cause of injury for seniors, and the large majority happen at home. Almost all of them are preventable.
Use this room-by-room checklist to spot risks before they become emergencies.
Entryways and stairs
- Add sturdy handrails on both sides of every staircase
- Repair loose steps and uneven thresholds
- Keep walkways clear of clutter, cords, and small rugs
- Make sure entrances are well lit, inside and out
Bathrooms
The bathroom is the most common place for falls, and small upgrades go a long way:
- Install grab bars near the toilet and inside the shower or tub
- Use a non-slip mat in the tub and on the floor
- Consider a shower chair and a handheld showerhead
- Set the water heater below 120 degrees to prevent burns
Kitchen
- Move everyday items to waist height so no step stool is needed
- Keep a fire extinguisher within reach and test smoke alarms
- Watch for stovetop safety, and consider auto-shutoff devices if forgetfulness is a concern
Bedroom
- Place a lamp and phone within arm's reach of the bed
- Add a nightlight along the path to the bathroom
- Keep the floor clear so nighttime trips are safe
Lighting and general safety
- Brighten hallways, stairwells, and any dim corners
- Use motion-sensor or nightlights for after-dark movement
- Keep a list of emergency contacts in an easy-to-find spot
- Consider a medical alert device for extra peace of mind
Where a professional eye helps
It is often the risks you stop noticing that cause the most harm. An outside perspective catches what a family walks past every day. At Chesapeake Caregivers, home safety is part of every care plan we build. Our caregivers help keep the home clear and hazard-free, assist with mobility, and flag new concerns before they turn into a fall.
